Ellen Verhofstadt (°1981) is working as a consultant for South Research since 2015. She has a background as a bioscience engineer with a specialisation in tropical agriculture and a PhD in bio-economics, complemented with a master in Cultures and Development Studies and a master in Food Science and Nutrition. Throughout her professional career she built up vast experience related to (impact) evaluations, sustainable development and development policy, agriculture, food security and gender. During her research period at the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico and at the KU Leuven University she was involved in several studies and projects. In 2014, she worked as an external consultant for the Word Bank. Through this wide range of experiences, Ellen acquainted herself in the analysis of reports, policy documents and academic literature…and in the organisation and evaluation of stakeholder and expert meetings. As a result of her work, she has a strong know-how to efficiently explore and examine both quantitative and qualitative data resulting in several reports and academic articles of high quality. Her main interests are situated around agricultural development (and food value chains), food security, public health, gender, intra-household relations and local (food) systems.
